Dougs room Indianapolis
Before
After
Designer Doug Wilson calls this room "a romantic island hut with splashes of sophistication." Fans know the room by its more Wilson-esque name: Suburban Safari. Doug, who gives each of his rooms a unique label, says, "The name for the room came from Jeff Shermer, the sound guy. I was trying to name it and had thought of something else. In the background Jeff said, 'Suburban Safari.' Boom, that was it." Doug's zebra stripe wall technique was inpired by his desire for a "Hemingway" feel, i.e., "sort of an eclectic, world traveler sort of thing."
Kia's room Ashburn
Before
After:
Homeowners Brad and Rachel wanted peace and sensuality in their bedroom designed by Kia Steave-Dickerson. They weren't disappointed! Kia's hanging bed and "Maharajah Gold Sienna" wallpaper put them in an exotic, Middle Eastern frame of mind. Antique Indian columns in cobalt blue stand as an entryway to Rachel's recessed "meditation room," where Ganesh patiently waits on painted grocery store pallets.
Gen's room Philadelphia

Designer Genevieve Gorder describes her plans for this room: "Old school meets new school in this bedroom inspired from the details of a cigar box. The room is fused with minimalistic modernism in the endtables and antiqued Spanish bedding. Bold colors and warm lighting make this room sexy. Taking the rich browns from the cigar box, valances and velveteen curtains are hung from ceiling to floor. The walls are the rich, luxurious colors of Caribbean debauchery. Very contemporary, chic, cigar-box like endtables with lucite tops that light up add to the Cuban feel."
Vern's Room Washington D.C.
Before
After
Vern Yip's injection of "sleek romance and cosmopolitan elegance" is obvious in his master bedroom redesigned for a newly wed couple. Vern's first order of business is to remove carpeting that has seen better days. The freshly exposed wood flooring is covered by a large cranberry area rug that matches the silk accents throughout the room. The fireplace is painted and draped with crystal attachments that hang from ceiling to mantle.

Edward Walker's "Golden Buddha" bedroom is painted butter yellow with accents of brown, red, blue and black. The design incorporates Indonesian bulletin boards over the bed, just below fabric that is hung to extend the headboard to the ceiling. Bedside shelves are open boxes that "float" on the wall next to the bed. Fabric lambrequins are board-mounted and hung over the bedroom's two windows. The large Buddha painting is Edward's own—he draws and paints the art himself. The total cost for this stunning renovation is $818.
Frank's room St. Louis
Before
After
Designer Frank Bielec refers to this room as "the child of Mae West, Salvador Dali and Chuckles the Clown." The description is obvious as Frank buys no less than seven paint colors for the room, including " Windsor Purple," "Banner Red," and "Flamenco Pink." Frank uses the homeowners' existing lamps to create "lampshades that look like underwired formals." The platform bed and open nightstands are built by carpenter Ty Pennington, but the bed treatment is all Frank. His plans read: "A. Cut wood and assemble. B. Attach to wall. C. Snicker."
Hildi's room Arlington
Before
After
Designer Hildi Santo Tomas works to modernize this tiny room using color inspiration from a Tiffany jewelry box. Having originally planned to paint the room yellow, Hildi sticks with her plan to airbrush a modern design on the walls. Her room also includes Roman shades that match the wall treatment. Unhappy with Hildi's plan for his friend's bedroom, homeowner Sean leaves a note hidden on the baseboard that reads, "Dude, she made me do it."

Laurie Hickson-Smith goes for glamour in this sophisticated French contemporary bedroom. She paints the walls a rich camel color that is accented with three shades of aqua in fabrics throughout the room. Laurie also creates a dramatic headboard by adding batting and fabric to an 8-foot frame built by carpenter Amy Wynn Pastor. The design plan includes two 8-foot bookshelves to flank the fireplace that is the focal point of the room.
