4.5 outta 5 already after 5+ spins.
Of course ya'll know that will increase to 5 outta 5 when I listen to it a 1000 times +... ;D
Where to start?
The
Intro was sweet, sorta a flashback/radio feel playin'
He Loves Me...
I'm Not Afraid is classic Jill. Reminds me of Honey Molasses, production-wise. Great lyrics, too. She ain't afraid, most def.
Golden, of course, is cool track. The hook is so catchy, and my guy Pete Kuzma's solo at the end is pretty nice. She really blows at the end. Perfect radio track.
The Fact Is (I need You) is already my favorite so far. I love the beat, the hook, the lazy feel of Jill's words are just perfect This track is for those women that think that they don't NEED a man.
Jill is sayin', well, we do need you.
Spring Summer Feeling feels just like it is. Cool track. She mentions Minnie Riperton in her liner notes, and this is one of two tracks I feel that pays homage to her. Great production work from Rafael Saadiq of all people.
Cross My Mind, my favorite track. Wait, I already got one, right?
Well, this track just shows you what Jill can do over a basic piano riff and drum beat. And doin' the poetry thang ala Love Rain. Ye-ah!
Bedda At Home has that ol-school New Jack Swing feel to it, and of course, the lyrics kill it here. Even tho' this man got everything it seems, she still got somethin' bedda at home. Wow.
Talk to Me has a great feel to it similar to tracks she did on the first album. The beat changes alot, though, and I love that. From neo-soul R&B to big band jazz, and Jill just adapts to it.
Family Reunion. What more you can say? If you cain't identify with this one, I feel for you.
Can't Explain, another track from my guy James Poyser. Sounds like a track he did on Badu's album. Good stuff here.
Whatever. The lyrics are crazy! That's all I'ma say. Great 70s R&B feel to it.
Not Like Crazy - love the beat. I'm feelin' this alright.
Nothing Interlude reminds me of I Think It's Better interlude from the first album. You be wishin' these interludes could be a whole song!
Rasool hits hard, both in the beat, and in lyrics. Makes you think. Cool they used a Barry White sample to add to a nice track.
My Petition is the other song that sounds like somethin' Minnie Riperton would do. I'm likin' this more and more. The groove is
cool.
I Keep is real. Jill calls out the cats that hate on you, but you just gotta keep.
Still Here, the hidden track, is cool. I love the beat. And the breakdown, Jill snappin' in the background, and then the guitar solo is fire. Wish it had it's own track so you can rewind it. ;D
This album is gon' be a classic in due time, just like the first one. What I'm suprised is that after four years, she still can sound the same, and produce great music that is so similar to her first one. So often you see artists try to "change it up" and go too far from their base.
But Jilly stays true to herself, and that's what I love. I love makin' the type of music that she sings to, so you know I love this album.
