Why must managers complain about time missed from work?
I have been since August 2003 and have had two deaths in the family, which cause me to use three days bereavement, two days vacation and one personal day, been in the hospital twice, which cause me to miss 5 days total, had a sick child once, which caused me to miss a few hours.
Do you know that two of my managers discussed it and then called me into a meeting with HR on conference to discuss it!!! They want to know how much more time am I going to need away. They also want to know what is wrong once I find out.
I need some help here guys. Help me understand this!!! I really like this job and enjoy most of the people and don't want to find myself in a situation.

sick days = personal days = vacation days = family illness =
and what was the time span of these days?
were they all in a matter of 6 months?

My company allows... 72 hours of sick leave a year 80 hours of vacation a year 24 hours of personal a year Bereavement is just for immediate family but it is 24 hours for each incident. The sick leave has happened in the last three weeks. (Hospital admittance and the like.) But should it matter if it can't be helped? I didn't tell people in my family to die nor do I just run to the hospital for every ache and pain. When I go to the hospital I really sick or something is really broke or something. I have a very high tolerance for pain and can deal with a lot.

Pissitivity? I like that word, I'm use it from now on... Seriously though, that don't seem like alot of time, and I would just explain that these are extreme circumstances. I cain't imagine ANYBODY in my family dying, and you had two, AND a sick baby? If HR already knew about the circumstances, then whassup? Sometimes, and I HATE when they do this, jobs think LIFE just doesn't happen outside of work. Period.

personally I think they could work with you on the time thing.. but management honestly 'don't give a f^^k...they want their job done with the least amount of problems.
it does suck that you have NOT been there a year before life's lessons took affect.
what was your response to the meeting?
and you're right management seems to think you are suppose to take a back seat to life for work.
i hope things work out and life calms down a bit.
i'm glad your baby is doing better.
one luv

So you missed 11 days in about 7 months...was there a time limit before you could use your days off...like some jobs dont let you take time until you have been there 3 months...if so that may be the reason they are trippin..if not as long as your time off is documented you will be fine also legally you dont have to tell them jack about whats wrong with you!!!!Just make sure you keep documenting everything..I hope it works out for you

Thanks guys for all the support and the words of encouragement... it really helps to know that someone understands what I am going through, sympathezes and can relate.
Let me clarify one thing...
My baby was not the one sick here lately.. it was me. I made reference to her being sick which made me leave work early one day. This was in response to naturalone's question asking for the breakdown. If my baby was sick and in the hospital... TRUST... they might have gotten cursed out.
Naturalone - My response to the meeting was ok, I understand and thank you. I had no questions or made no comments. I sent them an email this morning apologizing for any inconvenience that I may have caused any of them and told them for future I will schedule appointments during non-work hours or weekends and if the doctors offices could not accommodate I would find new ones.
HR called me back and apologized for giving me the wrong message. She said that the meeting was no way meant as a form a disciplinary action that they just wanted to make sure that I knew all the guidle lines for taking time off, making sure everyone is informed. They want me to go and handle whatever is going on so that whatever needs to be done to fix it can be done.
Am I buying into that shyt? HELL NO!!! They don't give a dayum about my black azz for real!!!
Mesha - The time limit to be able to use any sick leave is three months... which I have successfully completed. Personal days can used immediately and Vacation days can not be used until six months have been completed. I didn'e believe that I had to give them blow-by-blow details either but let me paste the sick leave guidelines here and let you all interpret the meaning...
Sick Time guidelines: Full-time, nonexempt associates earn six hours (.75 days) of sick time each month, up to 72 hours (nine days) maximum per year. Nonexempt associates may use sick time in hourly increments. Depending on business needs, you may make up time away in the same workweek. Any time you do not make up will be deducted from your sick time balance. You are eligible to use your available sick time once you have worked at Capital for at least 90 days. If you have worked at Capital for less than 90 days or have used all of your available sick time, you will not be paid for any time you spend away from work because of illness or injury except through any benefits for which you are eligible. In some cases, it is possible for associates to make up time during the same work week. If you miss work and don't have any available sick time or other benefits to cover it, an adjustment will be made to either the paycheck that includes the period in which you were absent or the next regular paycheck. You may use your paid sick time again when you earn more and have some available.
You may be asked to provide a doctor’s statement and/or other medical evidence if you are away from work because of illness or injury or for medical appointments (either your own or those of a qualified family member or spouse equivalent). This documentation should include the date the illness began or injury occurred, the nature of illness or injury, how long you will be unable to work, and when you are expected to be able to return.
If you are absent because of your own illness or injury for more than nine consecutive business days, and your doctor feels you are medically unable to return to work on your tenth day away, you may be eligible for Capital’s Short-Term Disability benefits.
If your time away is for a family and medical leave, there will be other certification requirements. [/font][/b]

So basically they are full of sh*t.....
If I read it correctly...you are covered, and you provided evidence that you was sick when your doctor called, you can't get anymore clearer than that...

I believe that this is a problem for the simple fact of it being a major corporation. Alot of these companies, like the bank I used to work for will go out of their way to treat their people bad, and it's terrible. I think you went about it the right way however I will say, document. Because if you don't they will try to come at you later with it. I mean document everything!
