"Meeting adjourned!"
Auset bangs the gavel on the oak wood while Justin and Ethan exit the boardroom and preceeded down the hall and to the right. Chocolatepoet74 and Solare need to feed off the excess information that transpired.
"I don't see how fruitful it would be to continue to sit back and allow this to happen!" Kym exclaimed.
Love sat stoicly, rarely lifting her head while at the slightest noise, Grayfox was ready to get her Tech.
The year is 2059. The American government has been overthrown and the sole survivors of the nuclear blast were the Hiddenbeach fmaily. Peculiar, isn't it?
"Ethan! Have you located Mocha and Jaye? My transponder has malfunctioned, over!" It seems that Universoulove and Ethan are the ones with the strength right now. Justin's our comforter.
"Soul, nothing yet, over!"
"Look Diz, I don't give a flyin' f*ck about some shitty poetry right now, okay!"
"Andrea, sweetie, I'm just as terrified as you but your attitude is not gonna do us any, so sit down, shut up and listen to me!"
Luckily for us, the infirmary has only two occupants, Jaidah and JP. Jaidah's on her fifth child. It's the ninth month and contractions are fourteen minutes apart. Luvsponge, Taw and Tawana took on responsibility for delivery. Jaidah's screams make me nervous but I revel in it for a being is born.
Before I go any further, I must explain our living situation. You see, there had been talks about nuclear warfare between the Alliance Nations and The Revolutionaries. The Alliance Nations consisted of The Republic States (formerly USA), South America and the Caribbean, Finland, England, Greenland, Sweden, Scandanavia, Norway, North Korea, West Germany (the country split in 2049), North Antartica (became Canada's estate in 2050; living conditions there were established due to a protein discovered beneath ice after The Glacier Melts of 2052 [credit given to the wondrous works of a scientist by the name of Kester Haye. I'll explain that later], France, and the continent of Africa.
Since the bombing of the Twin Towers in 2001, nation relations began to sever. The fever escalated for many years till physicality...words came to blows. Hundreds of thousands perished. Survivors kept hope alive through "set reproduction". Men and women are sometimes "put together" to produce children if these relationships don't happen naturally. Race preservation was even attempted but it faltered. Jaidah and PJ happened naturally. I met them in 2001 and they've prospered ever since. We almost lost them in 2002 but Creator was merciful.
Food became scarce till was sparce yet up until now the sole reason for our survival I know is ..destiny.
I remember the fateful day when hell opened its floodgates. It was for the release of my fourth book, Extensions.
There was a celebration at the Hiddenbeach compound where the outskirts of Philadelphia used to be. Jayreed and Ahmed met me at the entrance of the beach-house. Excitement polluted the air and totally invaded my senses. What a day yet something was very wrong. I couldn't point out exactly but the nagging, permeating feeling that the whole picture was wrong and an event was imminent.
I was the last to arrive. I remember loving the warmth of June. This place was the closest to heaven. Sprawling green lawns, begonias and carnations, petunias around the huge, solitary oak tree neighbored by the beautiful brick walkway, which was outlined by magnificently, manicured hedges leading to the doorway guarded on either side by white granite Roman columns.
"So Joy, you excited?" Jayreed's enthusiam momentarily dulled the conflict that raged inside me. I looked over to Ahmed who never broke stride.
"Is something wrong Luv?"
I wished Ahmed hadn't exposed me like that.
"Nothing...I'm fine, just...ex...excited...you know...nerves...the...the day...humm...yeah...can't wait!" (I had hoped I hadn't revealed too much)
"Uh Jay...go on ahead I'll be right there!"
At that point, I just knew Ahmed would pry until he understood my vacilation and pretense. The questions were soon to follow.
"Joy."
"Um...yeah."
"Ok...you can disguise your feeling as much as you want but I know you're having that nagging feeling because I feel it too."
"What are you talking 'bout."
"Oh come on now girl...you're smarter than that...we're both published writers. We live vicariously through crazy-ass characters we conjure, you can't hide from me. Tell me."
"There's nothing to tell, just...it's nothing...don't worry about it. I'm fine. Thanks for the concern. So who's here? You look handsome."
"Well you know.."
For someone well-versed, I was disappointed of such a cheap response.
Ahmed just had to push my buttons and I despised relinquishing myself to his efforts.
"Look, I...don't want to talk about it...maybe later, no offense but I just want to enjoy the moment"
"Well uh suit yourself but I won't quit...just so you know"
"Whatever..."
He and I entered the mansion and the smell of good home cooking enveloped my senses and I could feel the saliva building up in my mouth. This feels like home.
Ahmed's glance tapped me a little. (He just won't quit)
I saw Auset near the fire place and she looked quite elegant even down to her four inch heel boots, red leather. That sista got style. I had always admired her.
"Auset...Queeeeeeen Ausieee!"
"Hey girl! So this is the day. How you feel girl?!"
"Well I just don't.."
"JLove!"
"Soul! Is that you?! Oh I missed you so!"
"What it be like JLove? How u be?"
"Soul, you always bring a smile to my face. You don't know what it means to me to see you here!!"
I have never received such a gratifying embrace in all my years. His persona matches his true magnificence on paper.
"Where's Douglas?"
There was no way I would continue my participation in the festivities if he wasn't present.
With music blasting and food sizzling, talking, dancing, singing...just revelry...it was difficult to even hear oneself think.
Suddenly, one hand over my face and another shoving something cold into my right hand.
"Hey!"
"Justin! You dirty mutha lover! I missed you man. You didn't call me yesterday. I had hoped you didn't miss your flight!"
"Nah, short stuff...miss this...yeah..ok!"
"So you're a big sports anchor now, huh? How does it feel to collectin' all dat cheddar! You wit da big dawgs now eh? And with the music hussle...what you got for me baby ha ha!"
"Well girl...I do what I gotta do when I need to do it!"
Who would have even fathom this day to be the commencement of ultimate change. I see their smiling faces, oblivious to the inkling that churns my insides. I know this is home and something is wrong.
Yes, something is wrong. I can feel it, smell it! This striking sensation in the pit of my stomach...nausea...and I don't know the cause...
"HEY!"
In my left ear, the sustained ringing in my ears was attributed to the playfulness of Ethan. Liberation and the Mashiyach Music family surely cleaned up at the Grammy's three months ago.
"So how are you!"
"I'm excellent! See you're doing things! Can I have an autograph?!"
I chuckled to myself. If he only knew what that meant.
"Wanna drink shawty?!"
The only person with such a distinct, laid-back vocal stride would be Tamar.
"Hey sweetie! Congratulations on that new deal. TJ's from the PJ's baby!"
Tamar's recording company shot to the top and was all that I expected. The roster of artists was unbelievable.
"So how's the family?!"
"All healthy, all good, fo shizzle."
He's still sweet.
I had two sips of the Bailey's Irish Creme Tamar brought me and insisted myself to enjoy this moment.
Solare, Nubienne and Naturalone were seated on the veranda, sipping drinks, enjoying the sunset. The subtle pinks and violets just above the horizon. The sun seem so warm, almost tangible. Its rays quietly kissed the skin. It all being so inviting.
"Hey ya'll!"
"Joy!" In unison.
"Can I join you? It's so much more quiet up here. I missed you guys. Nat, I enjoyed your writing seminar in Athens. Character analysis...your mind is brilliant!"
"Thank you J! Extensions is a great read. In fact, I'm almost finished. You must have been one foot in the madhouse writing a three volume book in one take...Ex-ten-sions...you got that right!"
"I don't know what I was thinking. I thought pausing would be the death of me.."
What made me say that! I had to keep it together, I'm coming apart.
"Joy, I truly enjoyed it!"
Nubienne was one of the most skillfull poets I had ever come across. The deep passion for history and purpose of our people ensured me that the legacy of our literature will live on through her bravery and her descendents as well.
Solare was a character by himself. Original to say the least. We collaborated on two projects, a science fiction novel and his autobiography. To hell with editors, we did the work ourselves and boy was it a payoff!
"Joy baby, what cookin'"
"Sol, you crazy man. Been feeling under the weather but I'm cool."
"You look a little sick, to tell you the truth."
"Sol, I'm fine. I think I'll grab a bite to eat. Auset, Grayfox, Luciousmamii, Mimi cooked up a storm. So...I'll catch you later, aight?"
"Always the one to avoid questions..."
I wish Douglas would keep his mouth shut.
I promise to keep up with this...
I heed you to open your minds and leave the analytics for the real world...escape and enjoy.
