Now let me for-warn you, this is a Sci-fi book. It's not sci-fi in the instance that their are aliens and things like that but it's a very clever book, one that I thought I wouldn't like.
Octavia Butler is a black author who writes sci-fi, she's very creative and paints very vivid pictures.
The story is set in the future, 2020 I believe and it's centered around a black girl named Lauren Oya Olamina. Her family lives in a walled neighborhood where the world outside their neighborhood walls has gone wild...people killing each other, prostituting women and children and people breaking in homes, killing families and burning down homes.
I'm having a hard time explaining it, how about I'll get the book and get the description off the back of it. lol
I'll be back.

I saw this book in my libraray yesterday and put it down, as I've yet to read her accalimed book 'Kindred' and wanted to test the waters on that first.
2023 is the set year and yes it's a mother daughter, spritual development/ideology concept that draws them closer.
What do you think so far? I could pick it up and we could start to read this in September to discuss?

I read this book about 3yrs ago and loved it one of my favorite books is from this author the name of it is "WILDSEED" now this is an excellent read as well, her books make your imagination do things you never thought existed, this book is a sci fi lovestory of a warrior and trying to sap a warrior princess's power it is a very intricate story of how a strong woman can be broken down phyiscally, mentally and spiritually from LOVE. However parable is really a good read as well ENJOY!!!!!!!!

Here is the excerpt I copied and pasted from Barnes and Nobles site:
"Parable of the Sower is the odyssey of one woman who is twice as feeling in a world that has become doubly dehumanized. The time is 2025. The place is California, where small walled communities must protect themselves from hordes of desperate scavengers and roaming bands of "Paints," people addicted to a drug that activates an orgasmic desire to burn, rape and murder. When one small community is overrun, Lauren Olamina, an 18 year old black woman, sets off on foot, moving north along the dangerous coastal highways. She is a "sharer," one who suffers from a hereditary trait called "hyperempathy," which causes her to feel others' pain as well as her own. Parable of the Sower is both a coming of age novel and a road novel, set in the near future, when the dying embers of our old civilization can either cool or be the catalyst for something new."
Jam- I did the opposite. I want to read "Kindred" but it seemed so good and deep I wanted to become familiar with her writing so I was informed of 'Parable,' read it and it was incredible. So incredible that I read the sequel, "Parable of the Talents" last week.
I'd be down to read it again if you like, but we would have to follow it up with the sequel, 'Talents.'
Msmoore, did you read "Parable of the Talents"? I want to read 'Wildseed,' I just checked out 'Blood Orchid.' I want to read all her books. She is really talented and a rarity.

I have this book, I havent finished it yet but it is really good, I'd recommend it. It's thick as all heck I'll tell you that much! But she has inspired me to dable in scifi, I've got this book Idea I've been working on but it's a tad controversial.

It's called "Fledgling" Nat, the new book of hers that is and there is an article on her and the new book in the new Essence.
Auset, it was a quick read for me. It was thick, but I went through it super fast.
I'm reading Toni Morrison's "Paradise." I started it back in '98, read the first chapter, put it down and never picked it back up because it was such a hard read for me then. I had two pages of vocabulary words after the first chapter - then. It's fairly smooth after time.
