Ugly - Constance Briscoe [text taken from the play.com site:] A high-profile personal memoir launch from the publishers of the Number One bestseller "Behind Closed Doors". Constance's mother systematically abused her daughter, both physically and emotionally, throughout her childhood. Regularly beaten and starved, the girl was so desperate she took herself off to Social Services and tried to get taken into care. When that failed, she swallowed bleach 'because it kills all known germs and my mother always told me I was a germ'. When Constance was thirteen, her mother simply moved out, leaving her daughter to fend for herself. There was no gas, no electricity and no food. But somehow Constance found the courage to survive her terrible start in life. This is her heartrending - and ultimately triumphant - story. This is written by uk's first black female barrister for more info: www.timesonline.co.uk/article/0,,2092-1985687,00.html

The book is being calleda classic by the major book stoes in the UK, and currently holds rthe top 3 spot for 4 weeks running at Borders UK.
I'll be reading this on the plan to Trinidad, so I hope to give you an update come March Honey rain.
As a UK resident from a Carribean heritage I already identify with some of the 'abuse' featured, and know this will bring to light a lot of so called ' discipline' issues to light for me, as i hope to someday be a mother myself.
