I remember one day I was listening to Kelly Prices, you should have told me. I was feeling like I gained too much weight, you have to understand this is after years of being 115 I was 175. so I was straight sulking. My boyfriend was going out to the club like thursday through saturday and the words to this song just got to me for some reason that night. I started going at him like he did something wrong. I said all that to ask this question, do you ever feel a song so much that it may alter your current thinking about a relationship?

I believe in signs, I can't always see things clearly as far as relationships go. So sometimes if you hear the right song at the right time something clicks like oh! Sometimes songs simply serve as eye openers...

I certainly understand that, I had to really condition my self to understand that sometimes it's just a song and sometimes if you are in this situation at that time maybe it's not just a song. That example was really something that I laugh about now because it was just a song, and I had to shake up out of all that which I believe brought on the revolution of Reflections.
So what songs bring back memories for you? Lauryn Hill's ex factor always has me on the dejavu

shew, you and me both. that song was nothing but the truth of my situation at the time it came out.
when Maxwell's "This Woman's Work" first came out (long before it appeared on Love & Basketball).. man, i LOVED that song... but man o man.. after my crazy ex and i broke up.. he'd call and call and keep playing that song on my voicemail... man, i began to hate that song because it reminded me of my stupid/crazy ex.
Bel Biv Devoe's "When Can i See Your Smile Again"

I am very sensitive to music...all kinds of music and yes it can alter my mood...when my daughters father and I were breaking up my girlfriend and I use to go out to breakfast at this waffle house..and we would play the juke box....I would listen to Sinade O'conners..Nothing Compares to You....( I think thats that chiles name...white girl..bald head..early 90's..lol) anyway everytime I hear that song it takes me back....right now I am going through this thing with Kem...his CD is like how I feel right now...so I get a little touched when I hear his music....I listened to it all the way from Atlanta to Richmond...and still cant get enough!

Songs have both a negative and positive effect on me. It seems like with every big experience in my life there is a song I have to remind me of that very moment and what I was feeling at the time. Will Smith's "Summer Time" makes me smile from ear to ear because that summer was one of the best summers of my life. Steve Whonder's "Ribbon in the Sky" makes me feel warm inside because it makes me think of a time where I was truly in love. And Temptations "Silent Night" makes me deeply sad because it makes me think of the loss of my mother. Music is so powerful I guess that's why I get pissed when people say music does not influence the masses because music has such an emotional effect on people. I live for music if I could no longer hear music I would be heart broken.

Of course music has that effect on you. The different types of music, even broken down in a sub-category, can do it as well.
Being an amateur producer, when you make songs, you try to find the mood or setting of the song first. Then I go from there.
And that's why Glenn Lewis album and Jill Scott's album, although produced mostly by the same cats, sound and take you into two totally different positive or negative feeling on you.
Good topic.

well, everyone who knows me is well familiar with my theme song.. either Marvin Gaye or Chico Debarge's (or even Angie Stone's) version of "Trouble Man"..
especially.. "i come up hard baby, i had to fight.. took care of my business.. with all my might.. i come up hard.. i had to win... then start all over.. and win again."
aye, that's me. .. and it somewhat inspires me on not letting the outside world get to me because i've dealt with a lot worse coming up.

for the most part music has a positive effect on me... i pretty much know how certain artists are going to affect my state of mind so i am very selective of what i listen to and when i listen to it. if i want to cry i will listen to some donny mcclurkin, if i want to mellow out i'll listen to some roy hargrove or norach jones, if i just want to chill i'll listen to some floetry, etc.

I always turn to music when there is something going on in my life.... Angie Stone's "No more rain in this Cloud" Olivia's "Bizounce" Sunshine Anderson's "Heard it all before" got me through my failed engagement. It all depends on your mood.
