Everyone has a story. Aezra recording artist Crea tells her own story of heartbreak, loss and growth on her debut, Mystory, but the autobiographical burning moments of pain, the tangled incidents of confusion, the battles of conscience and occurrences of clarity that weave the fabric of Mystory are universal.
Mystory, an evolutionary blend of neo-soul, classic melodies and pop accessibility, deftly shines light on the shady corners of relationships. The laidback effervescence of "Changes" houses a monologue to a cheating man's girlfriend, where Crea admits that she was, albeit unwittingly, the other woman. Similarly, the album's first single, "U Lied" confronts an untrustworthy and unappreciative lover. But Mystory never comes off as garden-variety man-bashing. There's a depth, vulnerability and honesty in Crea's music that puts the listener in her shoes. Mystory turns the open book voyeurism of contemporary R&B into an out-of-body experience. Through the power of her words, melodies and voice, Crea's story becomes all of our stories.
Guitar-playing jazz scat vocalists, tortured soul icons, blind wunderkinds, convention-defying rock & roll bands, architects of R&B, folk/rock fusionists, retro-jazz enthusiasts - Crea was educated by them all. When she was 16, Crea joined her first band and began to use music and performance as therapy. Performing eventually led Crea to studio recording, where she was able to showcase her songwriting skills. "Being in the studio helped me grow and find my niche as a writer," she says. Crea would go on to write songs for rapper/actress Queen Latifah, child star Tracie Spencer, Motown artists the Good Girls, and others all the while being hired to sing live background on international tours. "I walked the balance beam - writing and performing," says Crea.
"I don't think about myself too much when I write," confesses Crea, who wrote the song lyrics for the entire album. "I think about women, or even men, that have gone through these things, just to let them know they're not alone. It's like saying, ‘I know this is what you think about. If you haven't had the balls to say it to that person, this is probably what you felt, so let me say it for you.'"
