LALAH HATHAWAY IS POISED TO 'OUTRUN THE SKY': Singer's 13-Track CD Will Be Released September 28.
Lalah Hathaway
(Aug. 30, 2004) Los Angeles -- Lalah Hathaway, daughter of legendary R&B vocalist Donny Hathaway, is poised to release OUTRUN THE SKY, her first album in a decade. The album willbe released September 28, 2004, on the Mesa/Blue Moon Recordings label, an independent label based in Los Angeles, California.
OUTRUN THE SKY is Lalah's most revealing work to date - one that encompasses more of her own compositions than ever before. She has the distinction of being known for having a voice that is, at turns, rich, resonant, nuanced and full-bodied.
The 13-track CD includes the sumptuous "Better & Better," a smooth and smoky ballad that tellingly describes how love can be when all the pieces fit. Produced by Mike City (known for his work with Dave Hollister, Yolanda Adams, Carl Thomas and Gerald Levert, among others), "Better & Better" stands out as one of the highlights of OUTRUN THE SKY. City also produced the lead track "Your Favorite Song."
The CD also features the soaring "Stronger," the country-tinged "If You Ever" and something funky to shake off an old lover titled "Back Then." There is the dreamy "More," a long, hot soak in a steam bath of blues titled "We Were Two," and the soul-baring groover "In The End." Each and every song is its own story, speaking intimately to your heart.
Then there's the slinky, organ and electric guitar-driven rocker with powerfully shifting dynamics that Donny would have dug, titled "Admit It." "Boston," is an especially haunting piece that sets you down in a stark painting from Lalah's past for a misty meditation on not only lost love, but also lost innocence.
Much of the inspiration for the love songs on OUTRUN THE SKY is autobiographical, and because some of her friends were also facing challenges in their own personal relationships, Lalah had ample opportunity to mine information, which formed the foundation of the album and which served to add another dimension to her songwriting skills.
The album also includes Lalah's interpretation of the CD's sole cover, Luther Vandross' "Forever, For Always, For Love." Originally produced by Rex Rideout for the all-star GRP concept project Forever, For Always, For Luther, a salute to the ailing music giant who has been sidelined by a stroke, it is an undeniable standout of that collection and OUTRUN THE SKY.
In addition to preparing for her upcoming release, Lalah has been touring during much of 2004. She recently appeared on the Super lounge stage at the annual Essence Music Festival in July. She's also been playing in various Blue Note clubs in Italy and Japan, and recently participated in a tribute to Billie Holiday called "Billie & Me" at the Barbican in London with Dee Dee Bridgewater, Chrissie Hynde, Angelique Kidjo, MeShell Ndegeocello, and Neneh Cherry.
She just completed the European "Daughters of Soul" tour (July 23-27) which made stops at the Nice Jazz Festival (7/23); Pori Jazz Festival in Finland (7/24 & 7/25) and the San Sebastian Jazz Festival in Spain (July 27th). This is a unique tour because the "daughters" include Simone, Milini Khan, (respective daughters of Nina Simone and Chaka Khan) and their "spiritual sisters" Nona Hendryx, Sandra St. Victor, and Joyce Kennedy. Lalah also has a number of spot tour dates in the U.S. this summer, which include New York City (8/2), Milwaukee (8/4) and Chicago (8/6).
In addition to her busy tour schedule and recording sessions, Lalah is also in the process of finalizing the details to commemorate her father's 60th birthday on October 1st, 2005. This will include several all-star concerts and will culminate with a TV special and release of a DVD. The artists participating in the concerts are those who have often cited Donny Hathaway as one of their musical influences, and who are today continuing his legacy of soulful R&B music.
