Former NBA star Jayson Williams' animal cruelty civil case has been postponed until after his upcoming reckless manslaughter case, which is scheduled to begin in January. New York's Daily News reports that Municipal Court Judge Joseph Novak canceled oral arguments which were scheduled for Wednesday, October 6th, and did not reschedule them.
Williams was facing a civil lawsuit by the New Jersey Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals for shooting and killing his Rottweiler, Zeus, in 2001. The organization filed a civil suit against the star since the one year statue of limitations for criminal charges had already expired. Williams could be fined up to $250.
The charges stem from an incident at Williams' New Jersey estate in 2001. According to the star's former teammate Dwayne Schintzius, he was at Williams' estate after a night of drinking on August 8th, 2001, when he made a $100 bet that he'd be able to drag Williams' dog, Zeus, out of the house, even though the animal was supposed to attack on command. After Schintzius did drag Zeus out by his hind legs, Williams got a double-barreled shotgun and fired one round into his dog's side and then another into his head. Schintzius alleges that Williams then reloaded, aimed the shotgun at him, and told him, quote, "Shinbone, get this dog off my porch or you're next." Schintzius says that he and another houseguest then buried Zeus in the rear of the estate.
